Blogging in the classroom...

I am currently teaching a learning strategies class to high school special education students. This class is designed to help teach special education students test taking, note taking, and organizational strategies that they can implement into their regular education classes.Although the strategies I teach are very helpful to the students, I believe the students could use blogging to further enhance their knowledge base of strategies they can use in class. I would like to see the students use their blogging skills to interact with other high school special education students and share the different learning strategies they have learned. They could share what strategies work the best and which ones are not beneficial to them. I believe the information my students receive from the blogging experience could help me gain a better understanding for what strategies my students actually think would help them in their regular education classes

  1. What a great way to help their metacognition--"here's what I did that works" is a great way to help folks with learning deficiencies build upon their strengths. I could see ( based on my experience with mainstreamed special ed students in my classes) that it could be a challenge to getregular meaningful participation from students overwhelmed with keeping up in all their regular ed classes. It is worth overcoming the challenge by being firm and supportive of their blogging, though, as I'm sure regular ed teachers will begin to require blogging in their classes soon.

  2. I believe that blogging for special ed students would work really well as they are not picked out in class and so relieves some of the embarrassment of not knowing something. I know that if I had been introduced to this way of teaching/this new tool when I had an inclusion class there would have been more and better quality production of work. Jerry, what are the needs of your students? Do you think that their writing and reading on the web will also aid them in their particular areas of need?
